The accuracy and reliability of psychiatric diagnosis in legal settings are particularly important, because diagnosis often influences the courts findings, the ciriminal responsibility of the defendants and even social policy. We need the highest possible confidence level for our diagnosis. This paper discusses the reliability of psychiatric classifiations as they are used in forensic settings. We also consider how psychiatrists or other qualified mental professionals communicate diagnosis in forensic settings.
