Mood disorder, especially depression is a risk factor for tardive dyskinesia. Meanwhile, the risk factors for tardive dyskinesia in bipolar disorder is not well known yet. In this study, 42 bipolar patients, 27 of whom have tardive dyskinesia are investigated retrospectively. The results show that, patients with tardive dyskinesia had longer depressive episodes; their initial episodes were mostly depression. The total duration of neuroleptic treatment was longer in this group. Additionaly, the prophylactic response to lithium monotherapy was poor in tardive dyskinesia group.
